Discography
The Semantics
Audio Cassette Recorded 1998 at DCM, Engineered by Andy Edwards (Ezra)
Line-up:
- Andy Coleman (guitar & vocals)
- Richie Jones (guitar & vocals)
- Don Clarke (guitar & vocals)
- Neil Dimond (guitar & vocals)
- Nigel Phipps (guitar & vocals)
Tracks
- Motor Runnin (Andy Coleman)
- Take Time (Andy Coleman)
- Blind Faith (Egan - Rafferty)
- For Your Love (Gouldman)
Described in Buzz Magazine as "Intelligent Rock & Roll", we've sold 500 copies, it still sounds good and it has a blistering solo by Richie done in one take and worth the admission fee on its own. Recently found a box of about 50 copies available if you've got the necessary equipment.
Is It Ready Yet
Released 2000 and something
This was a compilation album featuring all the people in the Wheatie Guitar Club, some covers, some originals, the Semantics played "How Sweet It Is", and worth it for the picture on the front drawn by Joseph Pearce.
All proceeds went to Ty-Hafan and the CD is sold out and deleted so you can't have one. Tough.
You can however hear the Wheatie Song on the soundtrack of the film "High Stakes".
Between The Covers
Released 2004
Motor Runnin
(Andy Coleman)
Different version to cassette
Two Bit
(A Coleman - Danny Chang)
Features on a film released in Iceland (the country not the shop, you sceptic), famous film, you know the one, got those huge stars in it.
Happy
(A Coleman)
Dedicated to scumbag drugdealers who don't have to pick up the pieces.
Tears
(A Coleman)
Dedicated to carers anywhere who do have to pick up the pieces.
Also on the CD in its Welsh translation for the S4C programme "Can-Y-Gymru" sung by Kathryn Evans.
No Disguise
(A Coleman)
Nothing against you personally God, just the people you hang about with.
Passed It On
(A Coleman)
A happy little song about AIDS, namechecking a Jack Lemon film for the film buffs.
Golden Moments
(A Coleman)
A song about long term relationships that has a 4 line resumé of a Franz Kafka novel! How interlekshual is that? Also sung in Welsh by Nia Lynn, a fab versionagain for Can-y-Gymru, and the first song played on S4C Digital, so there.
Got Just What You Wanted
(A Coleman)
A bit of nastiness is quite nice sometimes. Also great playing by Richie.
Take Time
(A Coleman)
As the cassette but better quality.
'Motor Runnin' & 'Two Bit' were two tracks recorded as a demo for Shakin' Stevens and featuring Hywel Maggs on guitar.
The bugger didn't use them and as a consequence he disappeared from sight and was never heard of again although he is rumoured to be working in a burger bar on Mars and married to Janis Joplin.
'Passed It On', 'Golden Moments' and 'Got Just What You Wanted', were written and recorded whilst bitter and twisted.
I still think the same about the subject matters i.e. God (any of them) have a lot to answer for.
Bitter and Twisted tracks are Happy, Tears and No Disguise.
Squint-Eyed Jack
Released 2006
The first totally Semantics band CD, and the first paid for by sponship.
So far it has raised about £3,000 for MIND.
Soothe Me
(A Coleman)
A song about mental health. We all talk to ourselves.
This is a song sung from the viewpoint of ourself talking back.
Angry guitar from Danny C. Great violin from Lucy Rivers.

Squint-Eyed Jack
(A Coleman)
The tragic tale of Jack, his friend Badass Con, his big hearted low-life girlfriend Sweet Belle, and the Devil. I break into tears just thinking of this tragic tale.
Just A Wearying For You
(Jacobs-Bond)
Proving that age doesn't matter to a good song.
This was written in 1901 and I first heard it sung by the wonderful Paul Robeson on a 1936 recording.
Featuring a great duet by Richie and Lucy, backed by the band, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Impact Gospel Singers.
One of my favourite ever songs.
Run On For A Long Time
(Traditional)
Gospel, gospel, gospel. Even for a non-believer it's still wonderful music. The Impact Singers doing what they do best.
Te Quiero
(High Stakes)
(A Coleman)
With a prologue on the sleeve, this also features the infamous Sweet Belle and was also in the film High Stakes. It helps to speak Spanish, or rubbish.
Paper and Calico
(A Coleman)
Long term marriage song. As in paper, calico, etc in order. We should all live so long. Lovely piano from Colin Edwards.
All I Want
(A Coleman)
I got this song from a dream I had about the European song contest. Decided to steal it from the dream. So sue me if you can.
Miss You
(A Coleman)
Skiffle. Music as it should be played live. Short, sweet, fun to play, great fiddle from Lucy. Pink Floyd eat your heart out.
We were all pleased with the album, think it's something to be proud of, and the feedback has been great. We enjoyed making it, doing the sleeve (posing) and another picture from my grandson Joe. Damien Hearst bollocks. Joe will teach you.
Wheatie DVD and CD Great Chord Almighty
The biggest undertaking. Again with help from sponsors we put together a 20 track CD of all different songs by Wheatie people
and also engaged Broadstroke Productions to film and edit a DVD.
The DVD has a feature on the guitar club, performances, out-takes and the quoits interview.
So far, has raised over £5,500 for MIND.
Dozy
In the beginning (sort of) was Dozy, and lo they had some great songs. So when it came to recording for CD for the first time ever, we ignored them all and did new songs! Then we went into the orphanage to see what else we could find... poor little urchins, as if they weren't suffering enough, we put them on the album.
This album is also for MIND.
1. Fallen Angel
(Coleman - Chang)
Not so nice boy meets not so nice girl with not the result they intended.
Oh the goodness in people will always shine through and the world will be a much better place peopled by people
with stars shining out of their ears and the cup of goodness flowing over and other cheesy bollocks.
Features backing vocals from Kim Ragin Ryan. We spoke to God because he understands, he said (name that song) Kim could come down to play.
The result was heavenly. The only song ever written about the new Cardiff Bay, and probably the last.
2. Jimmy the Barman
(Coleman - Chang)
The night is dark, the bar is smoky and peopled by sad lonely types who could have been contenders (name that film). Jimmy is the saddest.
3. Sadlands
(S Jenkins)
Stuart said have a song, so we did. Our version of the song that can be heard in its original state on the Wheatie DVD.
Hope you like it Stu. Hard lines if you don't.
4. Simple Line
(A Coleman)
Between success and failure, between...
5. Welcome to the Orphange
(A Coleman)
Performed and perfumed.
Self explanatory - obviously
6. I'm Still In Love With You
(A Coleman)
Performed by Danny and the Daleks
...which is good news for you because otherwise I would take you out and chop your fingers off.
7. Nightshift
(A Coleman)
Performed by The Semantics with Colin Galton
Recorded for the DVD.
Well I used to be a popstar...

8. And I'm Missing You
(A Coleman)
Performed by Danny and the Daleks
I've looked for you everywhere but you've probably fallen down the back of the settee.
9. Perfect People
(A Coleman)
Performed by The Semantics with Colin Galton
Featuring a duet with Diane Davis occasional Semantic, occasional heretic and regular drunk.
Also for the DVD
'Nightshift' and 'Perfect People' were recorded with Andy on acoustic guitar, Kim Styles on electric, Alun Rogers on bass, and Colin Galton (Ex-Dozy) on glue, and drums.
